The MICROCHIP MCP23016-I/SP is a highly versatile 16-bit I/O Expander IC designed to provide general-purpose parallel input/output expansion for I²C™ and SMBus compatible applications. This device is an ideal solution for adding extra I/O ports to microcontroller-based systems, enabling seamless integration with peripherals such as sensors, push buttons, LEDs, power switches, and ACPI controls. It features 16 programmable bi-directional I/O pins, each capable of sourcing or sinking up to 25mA, allowing them to drive LEDs directly without the need for additional driver circuits.
A key advantage of the MCP23016 is its simple I²C interface, which operates at clock frequencies from 0 to 400kHz. Three hardware address pins enable up to eight of these devices to coexist on the same bus, offering significant expansion flexibility for complex systems. The IC includes a polarity inversion register, allowing the input port data polarity to be configured, and an open-drain interrupt output that activates whenever an input pin changes state, reducing the need for continuous polling by the host processor.
