Microchip 16-Bit I/O Port Expander IC adds 16 remotely controlled input/output pins to a system over a high-speed I2C bus, extending I/O capacity beyond what a microcontroller provides on its own.

Overview

This integrated circuit is designed for projects that require additional I/O pins. Each of the 16 I/O pins can be configured as an input or an output by the system master, such as a microcontroller, through the I/O direction registers (IODIRA/B). Data for each port is held in corresponding input and output registers, and the polarity of input data can be inverted using the dedicated polarity inversion register, allowing interfacing with different logic levels.
