The Microchip MCP23S17-E/SO is a 16-bit general purpose parallel I/O expander designed for SPI and I2C bus applications. This integrated circuit provides a flexible solution for expanding the I/O capabilities of your microcontroller, making it ideal for a wide range of embedded and communication systems.
Featuring a high-speed SPI interface (up to 10 MHz) and three hardware address pins, the MCP23S17-E/SO allows up to eight devices to be connected on the same bus, offering scalability for complex projects. The device includes multiple 8-bit configuration registers for input, output, and polarity selection, giving you full control over each I/O pin. Both 8-bit and 16-bit operating modes are supported via the IOCON.BANK register, adapting to your design requirements.
The expander offers configurable interrupt output pins (INTA and INTB), which can be set to active-high, active-low, or open-drain, and can operate independently or together. An interrupt-on-change feature allows you to monitor pin states or register defaults, reducing the need for continuous polling. A polarity inversion register is also included to easily reverse the logic of input port data.
