The NXP PCA9555 is a versatile 16-bit general-purpose parallel input/output (GPIO) expander designed for I²C-bus and SMBus applications. This CMOS device enhances the NXP family of I/O expanders with superior features including higher drive capability, 5V I/O tolerance, lower supply current, and individual I/O configuration. It provides a straightforward solution for adding extra I/O lines to a system, ideal for controlling ACPI power switches, push buttons, LEDs, and fan monitoring.

The device is structured around two 8-bit configuration registers, allowing the system master to dynamically set each of the 16 I/O pins as either an input or an output. Data states are stored in corresponding input or output registers, and the polarity of the read register can be conveniently inverted using the dedicated polarity inversion register, supporting both active high and active low operation.

Key technical features include 5V tolerant I/O pins, an active-low interrupt output, and a low standby current for power-sensitive applications. Enhanced reliability is ensured by a noise filter on the SCL and SDA input lines, elimination of glitches during power-up, and an internal power-on reset circuit. The device is also robust, with latch-up testing performed to the JEDEC JESD78 standard, exceeding 100mA.

As an ESD-sensitive component, proper handling precautions are required during installation. This expander is widely used in industrial control systems, power management units, and sensing instrumentation, offering a compact and efficient way to extend microcontroller I/O capabilities.
