The Texas Instruments Buck-Boost Switching Regulator provides a highly efficient power supply solution for products powered by either a two-cell or three-cell alkaline, NiCd or NiMH battery, or a one-cell Li-ion or Li-polymer battery. It is capable of delivering output currents up to 1200mA, even when discharging a single-cell Li-ion or Li-polymer battery down to 2.5V or lower.
Based on a fixed frequency pulse width modulation (PWM) controller, this regulator uses synchronous rectification to achieve maximum efficiency, reaching up to 96%. At low load currents, the converter seamlessly enters power-save mode to maintain high efficiency across a wide load current range. This power-save mode can also be disabled, forcing the device to operate at a fixed switching frequency for applications that require it.
Key Features and Protection
The maximum average current in the switches is limited to a typical value of 1800mA. The output voltage is fixed internally on the chip, and the converter can be disabled to further minimise battery drain. Housed in a compact VSON-10 surface mount package, it measures 43mm in height, 33mm in width, and 15mm in depth, with a lightweight profile of just 0.109 grams.
