The CD74HC4017E from Texas Instruments is a high-speed silicon gate CMOS Johnson counter with 10 decoded outputs, designed for reliable counting and dividing in digital circuits. As a 5-stage device, it sequentially activates each decoded output on the low-to-high transition of the clock signal over a 10-clock cycle, ensuring accurate and predictable performance.
This counter features a carry output (TC) that transitions low-to-high after output 10 goes low, enabling easy cascading of multiple stages for extended counting. The count enable (CE) input halts counting when set high, while the master reset (MR) input, when taken high, resets all decoded outputs (except output '0') to a low state, providing flexible control over the counting sequence.
Designed with buffered inputs and positive edge clocking, the device ensures stable operation and balanced propagation delays. It can drive up to 10 low-power Schottky equivalent loads, with standard outputs supporting 10 LSTTL loads and bus driver outputs supporting up to 15 LSTTL loads. Compared to LSTTL logic ICs, this CMOS device offers significant power reduction, making it ideal for energy-efficient designs.
