Texas Instruments LM2585T-ADJ Flyback Step-Up Regulator, TO-220, 4-40V, 4A

The Texas Instruments LM2585T-ADJ/NOPB is a monolithic integrated circuit expertly designed for use in flyback, step-up (boost), and forward converter power supply applications. This highly efficient regulator simplifies design by requiring very few external components and is compatible with a family of standard inductors and transformers, offering great flexibility for engineers.

At its core is a robust 3A NPN output switch capable of withstanding voltages up to 65V. It operates over a wide input voltage range of 4V to 40V, making it suitable for a variety of input sources. The device utilises current-mode control, which significantly improves transient response, line regulation, and provides a precise current limit for enhanced system stability and protection.

Key to its reliable operation is the internal 100kHz switching frequency and a built-in soft-start function. This soft-start gradually ramps up the output, effectively reducing inrush current during power-up and minimising stress on components. Comprehensive protection features are integrated, safeguarding the output transistor with current limiting, undervoltage lockout (UVLO), and thermal shutdown.

The regulator maintains a tight system output voltage tolerance of ±4% across varying line and load conditions, ensuring consistent performance. Housed in a sturdy 5-pin TO-220 package for through-hole mounting, it offers excellent thermal performance and ease of assembly on printed circuit boards (PCBs). With a high typical efficiency of 93% and an operating temperature range from -40°C to 125°C, this IC is built for demanding environments where reliability and efficiency are paramount.
