When tapping blind holes, it is recommended to use straight flute taps in sets. A standard set includes three taps, known by various names:
- Taper or First Tap - For starting the thread
- Second or Intermediate Tap - For extending the thread further
- Bottoming, Third, or Plug Tap - For finishing the thread to the bottom of the hole
