The DFRobot Fermion TMF8701 Time-of-Flight Distance Ranging Sensor Board is a compact and advanced optical sensor module designed for highly accurate distance measurements. It utilises a 940nm VCSEL (Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser) to emit light pulses and calculates the time difference for the reflection to return, providing precise object detection regardless of colour, reflectivity, or surface texture.
This breakout board is incredibly versatile, offering two distinct operational modes. In proximity mode, it can detect objects from 1 to 10 cm, while the ranging mode extends this capability to between 10 and 60 cm (10-600mm total range). It delivers highly accurate measurements within ±5%, making it suitable for applications where precision is critical.
A key feature is its robust performance in challenging lighting conditions. The sensor incorporates on-chip sunlight rejection filters to minimise background light noise, allowing it to operate reliably in dark environments and even in the presence of direct sunlight. Built-in algorithms handle dynamic cover glass calibration and crosstalk compensation, simplifying integration and ensuring consistent results.
