FTDI FT234XD-R USB 2.0 to UART Interface IC, 12-Pin

The FTDI FT234XD-R is a highly integrated, full-speed USB 2.0 to basic UART bridge IC. This single-chip solution provides a complete asynchronous serial data transfer interface, enabling the straightforward addition of USB connectivity to a wide range of systems via a simple UART interface. Its design eliminates the complexities typically associated with USB protocol integration, allowing for rapid and efficient development.

Key Features and Performance

This device handles the entire USB protocol on-chip, removing the need for any USB-specific firmware programming. It includes a fully integrated 2048-byte EEPROM for storing custom device descriptors and configuring the versatile CBUS I/O pins. An on-chip clock generator is also integrated, negating the requirement for an external crystal, with an optional clock output available for system use.

Data transfer is robust and flexible, supporting rates from 300 baud up to 3 Mbaud. High throughput is facilitated by 512-byte transmit and receive buffers that utilise advanced smoothing technology. For easy host integration, the IC is supported by royalty-free VCP (Virtual COM Port) and direct D2XX drivers, which remove the need for custom USB driver development.

Interface and Power Flexibility

The UART interface supports configurable data formats, including 7 or 8 data bits, 1 or 2 stop bits, and odd/even/mark/space/no parity. Additional interface options include synchronous and asynchronous bit-bang modes with RD# and WR# strobes. The device supports multiple USB power configurations, including bus-powered, self-powered, and high-power bus-powered modes.

Integrated power management is a key strength. It features internal 3.3V/1.8V LDO regulators, an integrated +3.3V level converter for USB I/O, and a power-on-reset circuit. The IC offers true 3.3V CMOS drive output and TTL input, with the ability to operate down to 1.8V using an external pull-up.
