The FTDI USB to UART/FIFO IC (2232) is a single-chip solution providing USB to dual-channel serial and parallel ports with a variety of configurations. It handles the entire USB protocol on-chip, meaning no USB-specific firmware programming is required.
Data Transfer and Protocols
This device offers an asynchronous serial UART interface with full hardware handshaking and modem interface signals, supporting data rates from 300 to 3 Mbaud. It also provides a USB to parallel FIFO transfer data rate of up to 1 megabyte per second. The integrated Multi-Protocol Synchronous Serial Engine (MPSSE) simplifies synchronous serial protocol design, whilst the CPU-style FIFO interface mode streamlines CPU interface design.
Integration and Power
Designed for high integration, the chip includes a 3.3V LDO regulator for USB I/O, an integrated Power-On Reset (POR) function, and an on-chip clock multiplier PLL (6MHz to 48MHz). It supports bus-powered, self-powered, and high-power bus-powered USB configurations, featuring low operating and USB suspend current. The supply voltage ranges from 3V to 5.25V.
Interface and Configuration
The UART interface supports 7/8-bit data, 1/2 stop bits, and Odd/Even/Mark/Space/No Parity. An enhanced bit-bang mode interface option is available with RD# and WR# strobes. Configuration modes and USB description strings are configurable in an external EEPROM over the USB interface. FTDI's Virtual Com Port and Direct drivers eliminate the need for USB driver development. The chip is USB 2.0 Full Speed (12Mbits/second) compatible and UHCI/OHCI/EHCI host controller compatible.
