The Microchip MCP23X17 is a versatile 16-bit input/output port expander designed to add GPIO capabilities to microcontroller systems via a high-speed Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI). It features multiple 8-bit configuration registers for flexible control over input, output, and polarity selection for each pin, making it an essential component for expanding digital I/O in space-constrained designs.
A system master configures each I/O pin as an input or output by writing to the I/O Direction registers (IODIRA/B). Data for each port is held in corresponding input or output registers, and the polarity of the input data can be easily inverted using the dedicated polarity inversion register, simplifying interface logic.
