Nexperia 74HC164 8-Bit Serial to Parallel Shift Register SOIC-14

The Nexperia 74HC164 is an 8-bit serial-in, parallel-out shift register supplied in a compact SOIC-14 package, designed to convert serial data into parallel output.

Overview

The 74HC164 is a high-performance shift register and a fundamental component in digital logic applications where serial data needs to be converted for parallel output. It features two serial data inputs, DSA and DSB, which provide design flexibility. Both inputs are gated, meaning either one can function as an active high enable control for data entry through the other input, allowing greater control in complex circuits.

Operation

Data is clocked into the register on the low-to-high transition of the clock (CP) input. The asynchronous master reset (MR) input clears the entire register when a low signal is applied, forcing all eight parallel outputs (Q0 to Q7) to a low state independently of the clock or data inputs. This provides immediate and reliable system initialisation.

Key Features

• Eight parallel outputs (Q0 to Q7) with serial-in data entry
• Input clamp diodes on the inputs, enabling the use of current-limiting resistors when interfacing with voltage signals that exceed the supply voltage (VCC)
• Standard CMOS input levels
• Compliant with JEDEC standard No. 7A
• Compact SOIC-14 package for efficient use of board space

Applications

The device suits industrial control systems, consumer electronics and digital communication circuits. Typical uses include data expansion, I/O port expansion and interfacing microcontrollers with multiple sensors or actuators, driving LED matrices or multi-digit 7-segment displays, keyboard encoders, and serial-to-parallel conversion for data buses. It can also act as a serial data buffer or pipeline register in data transmission circuits.
