The Nexperia 74HC164D is a high-performance 8-bit serial-in/parallel-out shift register, a fundamental component for digital logic applications where serial data needs to be converted for parallel output. It features two serial data inputs, DSA and DSB, providing design flexibility. These inputs are gated, meaning either one can function as an active high enable control for data entry through the other input, allowing for greater control in complex circuits.
Data is clocked into the register on the low-to-high transition of the clock (CP) input. A crucial feature is the asynchronous master reset (MR) input; applying a low signal to MR immediately clears the entire register, forcing all eight parallel outputs (Q0 to Q7) to a low state, independent of the clock or data inputs. This provides immediate and reliable system initialisation.
The device incorporates input clamp diodes on its inputs. This protective feature enables the safe use of current-limiting resistors to interface the inputs with voltage signals that exceed the supply voltage (VCC), enhancing the robustness and versatility of the IC in mixed-voltage environments. It operates with standard CMOS input levels and is fully compliant with the JEDEC standard No. 7A, ensuring widespread compatibility and reliability.
