The NXP PCA9955BTWJ is an advanced, 16-channel Fm+ I2C-bus constant current LED driver designed for precise control of high-brightness LEDs. Optimised for dimming and blinking 57mA Red/Green/Blue/Amber (RGBA) LEDs in amusement and entertainment products, it offers unparalleled flexibility for dynamic lighting effects.
Each of the 16 LED outputs features its own 8-bit resolution (256 steps) fixed-frequency individual PWM controller. Operating at 31.25kHz, it allows the duty cycle to be adjusted from 0% to 100%, enabling precise setting of each LED's brightness. An additional 8-bit resolution group PWM controller can operate at a fixed 122Hz frequency or be adjusted from 15Hz to once every 16.8 seconds. With a duty cycle adjustable from 0% to 99.6%, it allows for synchronised dimming or blinking of all connected LEDs with a single command.
This driver is engineered for reliability in demanding environments. It includes an internal 8MHz oscillator requiring no external components, an internal power-on reset, and a noise filter on the SDA/SCL inputs for robust communication integrity. Features such as no glitch on power-up, low standby current, and 5.5V tolerant inputs on non-LED pins ensure stable operation. It also provides strong ESD protection, exceeding 4000V HBM per the JESD22-A114 standard.
Housed in a compact 28-pin HTSSOP package, it operates across a wide ambient temperature range from -40°C to 105°C, making it suitable for both industrial and consumer applications. The output current is easily adjusted via an external resistor connected to the Rext input, with a tight accuracy of ±6% between devices.
