The Power Integrations TinySwitch-III is an energy-efficient, off-line switcher IC that offers enhanced flexibility and an extended power range. It incorporates a 700V power MOSFET, an oscillator, a high-voltage switched current source, user-selectable current limit, and thermal shutdown circuitry.
Utilising a simple ON/OFF control scheme, this IC requires no loop compensation and provides constant efficiency down to very light loads. This makes it ideal for meeting mandatory CEC regulations and 1W PC standby requirements. The very low component count not only enhances reliability but also enables single-sided printed circuit board layouts, whilst its high bandwidth ensures fast turn-on with no overshoot and excellent transient load response.
The device features EcoSmart™ technology for high energy efficiency, easily meeting global energy efficiency regulations. It boasts no-load consumption of less than 150mW at 265VAC without bias winding, and less than 50mW with bias winding. Enhanced safety features include accurate hysteretic thermal shutdown protection with automatic recovery, and an improved auto-restart that delivers less than 3% of maximum power during short-circuit or open-loop faults. Furthermore, output overvoltage shutdown with an optional zener, self-biasing, and frequency jittering to reduce EMI filter costs make this a highly integrated and cost-effective solution.
