Texas Instruments CD4018BE CMOS Presettable Divide-By-N Counter, DIP-16, 8.5MHz

The Texas Instruments CD4018BE is a highly versatile CMOS presettable divide-by-N counter integrated circuit, designed for a wide range of digital timing and counting applications. Featuring a robust design with five Johnson-counter stages, it offers exceptional flexibility in circuit configuration.

This counter includes buffered Q outputs from each stage along with counter pre-set control gating. Key control inputs are provided for CLOCK, RESET, DATA, PRESET ENABLE, and five individual JAM inputs, allowing for precise operational control. The device can be easily configured for divide-by-10, 8, 6, 4, or 2 counter functions by feeding the appropriate Q output signals back to the DATA input. For division ratios greater than ten, multiple CD4018BE units can be cascaded.

Operation is straightforward: the counter advances one count on the positive transition of the clock signal. The inclusion of Schmitt Trigger action on the clock input permits unlimited clock rise and fall times, enhancing noise immunity and making the device forgiving of slow or irregular clock waveforms. A high signal on the RESET pin clears the counter to an all-zero state, while a high signal on the PRESET ENABLE pin allows data present on the JAM inputs to preset the counter to a specific value. Anti-lock gating is incorporated to ensure a proper and reliable counting sequence under all conditions.

Engineered for reliability, the CD4018BE features fully static operation and has been 100% tested for quiescent current at 20V. It offers standardised, symmetrical output characteristics and meets all the requirements of JEDEC tentative standard #13B. Its broad supply voltage range of 3V to 18V and wide operating temperature range make it suitable for demanding industrial environments.
