This Texas Instruments Power Distribution Switch is an adjustable, active high current-limited device designed for applications where precision current limiting is required or where heavy capacitive loads and short circuits are encountered. It provides up to 1.5A of continuous load current, ensuring reliable performance in demanding scenarios.

The device features a programmable current-limit threshold ranging between 75mA and 1.7A (typical), which can be easily adjusted via an external resistor. It achieves current-limit accuracy as tight as ±6% at higher current-limit settings. To minimise current surges during switching, the power-switch rise and fall times are carefully controlled. When the output load exceeds the current-limit threshold, the device limits the output current to a safe level by using a constant-current mode.

Protection and Safety Features

An internal reverse-voltage comparator disables the power switch when the output voltage is driven higher than the input, safeguarding devices on the input side of the switch. Additionally, the FAULT output asserts low during over-current and reverse-voltage conditions, providing clear system feedback. The switch incorporates an 85mΩ high-side MOSFET and offers a fast over-current response of typically 2µs. It operates within a voltage range of 2.5V to 6.5V and includes built-in soft-start functionality. Furthermore, this is a green product free from antimony (Sb) and bromine (Br).

Applications

Ideal for use in communications, networking, multimedia, and consumer electronics, this switch meets USB current-limiting requirements and is backwards compatible with the 2550/51 series. With an operating temperature range from -40°C to 85°C, and compact dimensions of 43mm height, 33mm width, and 15mm depth weighing just 0.076 grams, it is well-suited for robust and space-constrained electronic designs.
