The Texas Instruments SN74LS164N is an 8-bit serial-in, parallel-out shift register designed for high-speed data processing and transfer. Housed in a 14-pin DIP package, it features gated serial inputs and an asynchronous clear function, offering flexible control over data flow.
A key characteristic is its fully buffered clock and serial inputs, which ensure reliable signal integrity and robust operation in noisy environments. The gated inputs (A and B) provide complete control; a low level at either input inhibits new data entry and resets the first flip-flop low on the next clock pulse, while a high level enables the other input to determine the state of the first flip-flop.
Data can be changed while the clock is either high or low, with only information meeting the setup-time requirements being registered. Clocking occurs on the low-to-high-level transition of the clock input. All inputs are diode-clamped to minimise transmission-line effects, enhancing performance in industrial and communications networking applications.
