The TCA9548APWR is an eight-channel bidirectional translating switch from Texas Instruments, controlled via the I²C bus. The SCL/SDA upstream pair fans out to eight downstream pairs or channels, allowing any individual channel or combination to be selected through the programmable control register. This enables flexible bus management and level shifting between different voltage domains.
The system master can reset the switch in the event of a timeout or improper operation by asserting a low on the RESET input. A power-on reset deselects all channels and initialises the I²C/SMBus state machine. Asserting RESET causes the same reset and initialisation to occur without powering down the part.
The pass gates of the switches are designed so that the VCC pin can limit the maximum high voltage passed by the TCA9548A, permitting different bus voltages on each pair. This allows 1.8V, 2.5V, or 3.3V parts to communicate with 5V parts without additional protection.
Key features include an active-low reset input, power-up with all switch channels deselected, low Ron switches, no glitch on power-up, support for hot insertion, low standby current consumption, 5V tolerant inputs, and a clock frequency range of 0 to 400kHz. The device exceeds 100mA latch-up performance per JESD 78, class II, and is a green product with no Sb/Br.
Important Note: The device has limited built-in ESD protection. Leads should be shorted together or the device placed in conductive foam during storage or handling to prevent electrostatic damage to the MOS gates.
