Compact FTDI USB 2.0 to serial UART interface in SSOP-16 package. Supports up to 3Mbaud, requires no external crystal.
The FTDI USB 2.0 to Serial UART Interface is a compact, single-chip solution in a 16-pin SSOP package. It simplifies USB implementations with minimal UART signals and reduces external component count by fully integrating MTP memory and a clock circuit, requiring no external crystal.
The entire USB protocol is handled on the chip, eliminating the need for USB-specific firmware programming. It offers data transfer rates from 300 baud to 3 Mbaud at TTL levels, supporting RS422, RS485, and RS232. The device includes 512-byte receive and transmit buffers utilising buffer smoothing technology, alongside 2048 bytes of multi-time programmable memory for storing device descriptors and CBUS I/O configuration.
Additional features include FTDI’s royalty-free Virtual Com Port (VCP) and Direct (D2XX) drivers, configurable CBUS I/O pins, and transmit and receive LED drive signals. It supports UART interfaces with 7 or 8 data bits, synchronous and asynchronous bit bang interface options, and USB Battery Charger Detection. Supplied pre-programmed with a unique USB serial number, it supports bus-powered, self-powered, and power switching configurations.
The interface incorporates an integrated +3.3V level converter for USB I/O, true 3.3V CMOS drive output, and TTL input. Configurable I/O pin output drive strength ranges from 4mA to 16mA. With integrated power-on reset circuitry and AVCC supply filtering, it ensures reliable operation while maintaining low operating and USB suspend currents of 8mA and 70µA respectively.
