The SparkFun Weather Station Kit provides the three essential components for building a fully functional, DIY meteorological monitoring station. This comprehensive kit allows enthusiasts, educators, and hobbyists to measure key environmental conditions: wind speed, wind direction, and rainfall.

Designed for hands-on assembly and integration, the kit includes all necessary sensors and mounting hardware. The rain gauge utilises a clever self-emptying bucket mechanism. For every 0.011 inches of collected rainfall, it activates a momentary button closure, allowing for precise precipitation measurement. The anemometer (wind speed sensor) encodes data by closing a switch with each rotation; for example, a wind speed of 1.492 mph results in one switch closure per second. The wind vane determines direction by outputting a variable voltage through a resistor network, enabling it to indicate up to 16 distinct compass positions.

All sensors are built with reliability in mind, employing sealed magnetic reed switches and magnets for longevity. It is important to note that an external voltage source is required to power the sensors and take measurements. For easy connection, each sensor reports its data via a standard RJ11 terminated cable, simplifying integration with microcontrollers, data loggers, or single-board computers like Arduino or Raspberry Pi.

Supplied as a kit, it requires basic assembly, offering an engaging project that demystifies how weather stations operate. The package includes the wind vane, anemometer, rain gauge, a mounting mast, arms, clamps, and zip ties for secure installation outdoors.
