Product1 Descriptione were widely used in Anglo-Saxon cemeteries of the pagan period, but the fact that some were found with Christian symbols such as fish and crosses suggests that they were also used in the Christian period up to the 7th and 8th centuries. Some of these pins may have been used as amulets or had some other symbolic significance. The massive 7th-century Tara brooch is the most spectacular of dozens of fine Irish brooches, which were probably worn by both men and women. Many are ring-shaped, with long decorative pins, and without the bow that had developed by the Roman period from the more functional bent wire originals. The brooch in various forms was the most useful personal adornment and clothing fastener, as well as often having other functions such as holding , which was important in the Early Middle Ages, when pockets had not been invented. In the 8th and 9th centuries, Scandinavian Viking men and women wore and developed a variety of brooch types including the distinctive penannular (incomplete ring) and annular (complete ring) brooches, often used to fasten cloaks, and often large—for women, the signal of status moved from elaborate buckles to brooches, worn in pairs. The most common designs were simple geometric or running patterns, often with the addition of animal decoration in the late period. Finds in pagan Viking grave fields suggest that many women were buried with a brooch on either shoulder, one for their outerwear, and one for their undergarment. The body was pinned closed with a knife through it.1
