The POWER INTEGRATIONS AC/DC Converter (LinkSwitch-TN series) replaces linear and capacitor-fed non-isolated power supplies in applications up to 360 mA output current, offering improved performance and energy efficiency at comparable system cost. This monolithic IC integrates a 700 V power MOSFET, an oscillator, a simple On/Off control scheme, a high-voltage switched current source, frequency jittering, cycle-by-cycle current limit, and thermal shutdown circuitry, all in a compact SOIC-8 package.
The device derives start-up and operating power directly from the DRAIN pin, eliminating the need for a bias supply in buck or flyback converter designs. This results in a lowest cost, lowest component count buck converter solution. With a 66 kHz switching frequency and an accurate current limit, it allows the use of a low-cost, off-the-shelf 1 mH inductor for output currents up to 120 mA. The 700 V breakdown voltage provides excellent input surge withstand capability.
The converter supports buck, buck-boost, and flyback topologies and offers system-level thermal overload, output short-circuit, and open control loop protection. It provides excellent line and load regulation even in typical configurations, with high bandwidth ensuring fast turn-on without overshoot. The current limit operation rejects line ripple, and the device operates over a universal input voltage range of 85 VAC to 265 VAC. Built-in current limit and hysteretic thermal protection further enhance reliability.
