The Broadcom HCPL-0501-000E is a high-speed, 1-channel optocoupler designed for reliable signal isolation in demanding digital circuits. It utilises a sophisticated diode-transistor configuration with an insulating layer between the input LED and an integrated photo-detector, providing robust electrical insulation between input and output sides.

A key feature is the separate connections for the photodiode bias and the output-transistor collector. This innovative design significantly reduces the base-collector capacitance, resulting in a speed increase of up to one hundred times compared to conventional phototransistor couplers. This makes it perfectly suited for high-speed TTL and TTL-level applications.

Performance and Compatibility

The device is designed for seamless integration. A standard 16mA TTL sink current through the input LED generates sufficient output current to drive one TTL load when used with a 5.6kΩ pull-up resistor. It offers a high-speed data rate of 1Mbps and features an open-collector output for flexible interfacing. Performance is guaranteed across a broad operating temperature range of 0 to 70°C, ensuring stability in various environmental conditions.
