The FTDI FT2232HL-REEL is a fifth-generation, dual-channel USB 2.0 high-speed (480 Mbps) to multipurpose UART/FIFO interface integrated circuit. This highly versatile chip can be configured into a wide variety of industry-standard serial or parallel interfaces, making it an essential component for embedded systems, development tools, and protocol conversion applications.

A standout feature is its dual multi-protocol synchronous serial engines (MPSSE), which greatly simplifies the design of synchronous serial protocol interfaces such as USB to JTAG, I²C, SPI, or custom bit-bang modes. The entire USB protocol is handled on-chip, eliminating the need for complex USB-specific firmware programming. It supports both USB 2.0 high-speed (480 Mbps) and full-speed (12 Mbps) operations.

The IC offers extensive configuration options, including MCU host bus emulation mode and independent baud rate generators for each channel. It provides flexible power management, supporting bus-powered, self-powered, and high-power bus-powered USB configurations. For robust serial communication, it features fully assisted hardware or software (X-On/X-Off) handshaking, and its UART interface supports 7/8-bit data, 1/2 stop bits, and Odd/Even/Mark/Space/No parity options.

Engineers will appreciate the auto-transmit enable control for RS485 applications using the TXDEN pin, configurable I/O drive strength and slew rate, and low operating currents.
