The FTDI FT4232HL-R is a quad high-speed USB 2.0 (480Mb/s) to multipurpose UART/MPSSE interface IC, supplied in a compact 64-pin LQFP package. As a 5th generation USB device, it integrates four UART channels, two of which can be independently configured as MPSSE (Multi-Protocol Synchronous Serial Engine) engines. This flexibility allows the FT4232H to operate as two UART/bit-bang ports plus two MPSSE engines, enabling emulation of JTAG, SPI, I2C, bit-bang, or other synchronous serial protocols.
The entire USB protocol is handled on-chip, so no USB-specific firmware programming is required. The device is compatible with USB 2.0 high-speed (480Mbits/s) and full-speed (12Mbits/s) modes. Features include independent baud rate generators, RS232/RS422/RS485 UART transfer data rates up to 12Mbaud, an adjustable receive buffer timeout, and a 3.3V single supply operating voltage. It supports USB bulk data transfer mode (512-byte packets in high-speed mode) and a UART interface with 7/8-bit data, 1/2 stop bits, and odd/even/mark/space/no parity options. The IC boasts low operating and USB suspend current, with an ambient operating temperature range from -40°C to 85°C, making it suitable for demanding environments.
