Overview

The Microchip PIC16F648A 8-Bit Flash Microcontroller is a fully-static, Flash-based CMOS microcontroller with a 20MHz clock speed, designed for robust and efficient embedded control applications. It is housed in an 18-pin Dual In-line Package (DIP) for through-hole PCB designs.

The device uses a Harvard architecture with separate instruction and data buses. This allows a 14-bit wide instruction word to be paired with an 8-bit wide data path. A two-stage instruction pipeline permits most instructions to execute in a single cycle, supporting swift operation for time-critical tasks. The microcontroller is supported by a reduced instruction set of 35 commands and a large register set, offering flexibility for programmers.

Key Features

Integrated features reduce the need for external components, which can enhance overall system reliability and help minimise power consumption, an important consideration for battery-powered designs. The core includes an eight-level deep stack and supports multiple internal and external interrupt sources for responsive event handling.

On-chip memory: 7KB of Flash program memory and 256 bytes of EEPROM data memory for non-volatile storage
Clock and timing: 4MHz internal oscillator, watchdog timer with its own independent oscillator, and a low-speed clock mode
Communication and control: USART for serial communication, capture/compare/PWM module, and two comparators with a programmable voltage reference
Reliability: brown-out reset, power-on reset, programmable code protection, and programmable weak pull-ups on Port-B
Programming: In-Circuit Serial Programming (ICSP) via two pins and low-voltage programming

Dimensions and Weight

The unit measures 3.3 (width) by 1.5 (depth) by 4.3 (height) and weighs 6.2 gm.

Applications

Suited to embedded control applications, battery-powered designs, and time-critical tasks, this microcontroller is well suited to through-hole PCB projects. Choose the Microchip PIC16F648A when you need an 8-bit Flash microcontroller with integrated communication, timing, and programming features in an 18-pin DIP package.
