Power Integrations TinySwitch-III AC/DC Switcher IC 14W DIP-7

The Power Integrations TinySwitch-III is an energy-efficient, off-line switcher IC designed with enhanced flexibility and an extended power range. It incorporates a 700V power MOSFET, an oscillator, a high-voltage switched current source, a user-selectable current limit, and thermal shutdown circuitry. This IC family utilises a simple ON/OFF control scheme, offering a design-flexible solution with low system cost and extended power capability.

Performance and Efficiency

The ON/OFF control provides constant efficiency down to very light loads, making it suitable for meeting mandatory CEC regulations and 1W PC standby requirements. A very low component count enhances reliability and enables single-sided printed circuit board layout. Furthermore, high bandwidth provides fast turn-on with no overshoot and good transient load response. The device is self-biased, requiring no bias winding or bias components, and features frequency jittering to reduce EMI filter costs.

Safety and Protection

Safety features include accurate hysteretic thermal shutdown protection with automatic recovery, eliminating the need for manual reset. An improved auto-restart delivers less than 3% of maximum power during short-circuit and open-loop fault conditions. Additional features include a tight I²f parameter tolerance that reduces system cost, and output overvoltage shutdown with an optional zener. The pin-out simplifies heat sinking to the PCB, while the SOURCE pins are electrically quiet for low EMI.

Power Specifications

This device offers 20W adapter power (36.5W peak/open) at 230V AC ±15%, and 14W adapter power (28.5W peak/open) at 85-265V AC. No-load consumption is less than 150mW at 265V AC without a bias winding, and less than 50mW with a bias winding.
