Power Integrations TNY268PN Off-Line Switcher DIP8

The Power Integrations TNY268PN Off-Line Switcher DIP8 is an off-line switcher IC with a 700V power MOSFET and a 132kHz switching frequency, housed in a compact 8-pin DIP package.

The TNY268PN is a TinySwitch-II, EcoSmart, off-line switching power supply IC designed for enhanced energy efficiency in low-power applications. It combines a 700V power MOSFET, oscillator, high-voltage switched current source and comprehensive protection circuitry into a single monolithic chip. Start-up and operating power is drawn directly from the drain pin, removing the need for a separate bias winding and its associated components. This simplifies circuit design and reduces costs.

Key Features

• High Integration: Controller, MOSFET and protection combined in one 8-pin package
• EcoSmart Technology: Designed to meet CEC, Energy Star and EU energy efficiency requirements
• Quiet Operation: Intelligent control scheme minimises audio frequency components, practically eliminating audible noise even with standard taped or varnished transformer constructions
• Comprehensive Protection: Auto-restart, current limiting and thermal shutdown
• Line Undervoltage Sensing: Built-in line undervoltage sensing and frequency jittering
• Design Flexibility: Supports output power up to 23W (230VAC) in open-frame designs or 16W in enclosed adapters
• Transformer Compatibility: Uses EF12.6 or EE13 cores, reducing transformer size

Auto-Restart Protection

The fully integrated auto-restart circuit limits output power during fault conditions such as short circuits or open loops. This enhances safety and reliability while minimising external component count.

Applications

The TNY268PN is suited to low-power off-line switching power supplies, open-frame designs and enclosed adapters. It also offers a compact replacement for bulky linear regulators, with fewer external components required.
