The SparkFun QRE1113 Line Sensor Breakout Board is designed for simple digital line sensing in robotics and automation applications. This compact board features a QRE1113 IR reflectance sensor that provides a digital output signal, making it compatible with both 3.3V and 5V microcontroller systems.
At its core, the sensor consists of an IR emitting LED paired with an IR-sensitive phototransistor. The clever circuit design ties the phototransistor output to a 10nF capacitor - the discharge rate of this capacitor indicates surface reflectivity. On highly reflective white surfaces, the capacitor discharges quickly, while black surfaces result in slower discharge rates, enabling accurate line detection.
