The Microchip Explorer 16 Development Kit is a cost-effective and versatile platform designed for evaluating the advanced features of 16-bit PIC24 microcontrollers, dsPIC33 Digital Signal Controllers (DSCs), and the 32-bit PIC32MX device family. It streamlines the prototyping and debugging process, significantly accelerating the development of embedded applications.
At the heart of the system is the Explorer 16 development board, which features a flexible 100-pin interface supporting two interchangeable Plug-In Modules (PIMs). The kit includes pre-programmed PIMs for the PIC24FJ128GA010 and dsPIC33FJ256GP710, allowing developers to switch between processors effortlessly using a dedicated slider switch. This design supports a wide range of 3V, 16-bit, pin-compatible microcontrollers with the appropriate PIM modules, which are visually indexed for correct installation.
Key Features & Connectivity
The board offers extensive connectivity and expansion options to suit various development needs. It provides a direct 9VDC power input that supplies regulated +3.3V and +5V rails to the entire board. For programming and debugging, it interfaces seamlessly with MPLAB ICD 2 and MPLAB REAL ICE tools, and includes both USB and RS-232 connectivity for communication and device programming.
A generous prototype area is available for developing custom application circuitry. Expansion is facilitated through a socket and edge connector compatible with PICtail Plus daughter cards, and a six-pin interface for the PICkit 2 programmer. Additional features include a JTAG connector pad for optional boundary scan functionality and a standard 6-wire In-Circuit Debugger (ICD) connector. The board also incorporates 74HCT4053 multiplexers for selectable crossover configuration on serial communication lines.
